About the Blog

This is a running record of the work Jason and Lena are doing to bring a 1978 VW Bus back to life. She was very close to death's door when we bought her.

We now have a functional vacationmobile that we are taking on adventures. So, this blog has morphed into a travelogue sprinkled with our break-down stories and latest upgrades. Hopefully more of the latter!

Look back in the archive for ALL the work we did to get her where she is today.

Enjoy :)

Engine Time!

Hello Everyone!  You thought we gave up, but we didn't!

After the last trials and tribulations, we have made some progress on the engine.
Here goes:

Block is together, and the crank turns!
CCing the heads to figure out deck height and compression ratio.
Got it to a nice 7.4:1
Installing cylinders and pistons
Cylinder heads on
Checking the crankshaft end-play (gonna need different shims!)
Cylinder baffles were making me mad!  They got bent up when we took them off - good now:)

Next: Valve train!

It has been a bit but here is the latest:

Windscreen is in
Happy to be looking down the road
Floor "before" in case you forgot
Back floor is in

How the little table works. -Like the staging with the  drinks cooler?

Side view - no, Suzanne doesn't have a catheter, that's the drain for the icebox! (not cut to length yet)
New table
Right side with the door
The weather is getting cool.  So we hope to have the inside done and the gas tank in before it gets nasty out.

Nice to have you visit!  Y'all come back now!

ps:  We will have engine pictures some day....

Some Doors and Some Annoying Discoveries

We got the doors and have installed all but the Sliding door as we are awaiting for a roller to ship.  We got sent the one of the other side (which only exists in Europe?!?)

Glass has been tinted and we got the passenger door window in.

Wiring is almost done - just have to run from the front to the back.  You will note that the dash is in!

We started building the engine and the stopped abruptly when the connecting rods (new) would not turn on the crank (freshly machined).  Turns out the supplier machined in between oversizes - in normal speak it was too big for the new bearings and to small for the old ones-  boo!

So we had to take it to a local machine shop to get it done again.

See you in the funny pages!

A wee bit more...

Took forever though!
The canvas anchoring and installation of the luggage rack was a major pain!  We got it done though - phew....

A few other bits as well.

Roof is fitted
J says hello!
Seats are in the front.  Right cushy they are!

Tomorrow- completion (I hope) of the wiring - better not be any trouble shooting to come :) and starting the engine build.

TA!

Oh boy, it's starting to look like a van!

I must apologize for not posting while some much has been happening.  That is the reason why I haven't posted though - I've been so busy!

Check out the progress on our girl:

Smile!
The nose is getting all the bits put back in, washers, wiring, duct work.  Note the floor -still just paint
Engine bay also getting wired up
Insulation too - Sound deadener under the upper cover

Heat and Noise Reducer (ceramic paint) laid down
Here too!
Then truck bed liner went down after (note that the seat belts are in -safety first!)
My window is in!!!  Pop top on too
Zoom in on this , eh!
Some interior installed (lots of sound deadener and insulation under the panels)
Looking cozy
It is starting to look like something (Canvas still needs to be anchored to the van roof)
The push is on now.  See ya soon!
