About the Blog

This is a running record of the work Jason and Lena are doing to bring a 1978 VW Bus back to life. She was very close to death's door when we bought her.

We now have a functional vacationmobile that we are taking on adventures. So, this blog has morphed into a travelogue sprinkled with our break-down stories and latest upgrades. Hopefully more of the latter!

Look back in the archive for ALL the work we did to get her where she is today.

Enjoy :)

Boo Hoo!

Today was disappointing!
We tore down the engine from the green van (which was supposedly rebuilt) only to find out it was not so good.

A bit more end-play for the crankshaft than is recommended...

Ignore the light radiating from heaven, it's not that good!

Part-way into the tear-down

Transmission, clutch and flywheel off

All the tin/covers, gotta scrub that up

The ball bearing and spring you see is the oil pressure relief valve.  NOT supposed to fall out with the oil filter (sigh)

Hope the next post will bring some forward progress.  Gotta go look for engine parts now -ta ta!

Trying out some new skills --> wood refinishing

We had GREAT weather this weekend so we took advantage and worked on the cabinetry/interior trim.

There was mould, old stain, dirt, etc that had to be removed and then new stain was applied.  All finished up with a nice coat of varethane.

Front Roof Liner - It is plasticized.  You can see how it cleaned up.  Stay tuned for how we decorate it.
BEFORE- see below (yuck and mold)
AFTER: Trim panel for under the left middle window (between the buddy seat and bench seat)
After sanding and before for upper trim pieces (between window and headliner)
After staining and before for upper trim pieces (between window and headliner)
Found a bit of history in the head-ache rack (see below)
Not gonna stain the inside now.  Hee Hee "Live Bait!"
Bottom of said rack - all stained up (note the sunshine!)

Thanks for visiting today!

Weld, weld, weld, clean, clean, clean...

Today Suzanne's left side got zipped up!! No more flappy metal to run into.  There is just a couple of small holes to patch now.

The engine compartment was cleaned some more too.  I think the ride height has started in increase now that all that dirt is being removed.

All done up

Not sticking out anymore!

Some new parts are in!

After much frustration over being shipped the wrong floor, we have gotten our hands on a good one and it has been installed!!!!

No more Fred Flintstone driving for Suzanne:

Weeee!!!!!
Yippeee!!!!!!!!!
Right front wheel well, all patched and sealed
Right front door fitted back on so the wheel arch can go in
Left front door as above and cleaned up and treated
Rear: all the nasty insulation and glue is gone (might have been dog hair...)
WHAT!?!?!
Rear all cleaned and treated.  Needs holes spot-welded up - someone, somewhere decided to run a LOT of screws into random places
Starting to fix this rusty mess...
The last annoying thing of the day: ripped my coveralls on the rear hatch catch (guess where!)
