About the Blog

This is a running record of the work Jason and Lena are doing to bring a 1978 VW Bus back to life. She was very close to death's door when we bought her.

We now have a functional vacationmobile that we are taking on adventures. So, this blog has morphed into a travelogue sprinkled with our break-down stories and latest upgrades. Hopefully more of the latter!

Look back in the archive for ALL the work we did to get her where she is today.

Enjoy :)

Iron Oxide is in the Air....

Rust, Rust, Rust....

We have had a few solid days of work and pretty much all of the rusted out panels are gone.  They seem to have made their way into my hair, ears, nose, etc.  BLAH!

Here's some pics:
SO MANY spot welds to drill out

Close-up

Wheel Arches are Out

Mock-up for of plans for the centre console/stool
Front floor on its way out
It's gone!

All-clean and rust-treated
Rust treatment in the right front wheel arch too
Welded up
Seat-back patched up some more
Suzanne was starting to collect top-soil in the rear panel

See!!!

Soil and damp equal rust - guess that's why the rear bumper mount nuts tore out of the body!

Rust out of the left rear quarter

All the bits of Suzanne's rear-end (HA!)
Where the bits came from

Right side battery tray is out

Sliding door track welded back together (someone decided to cut it out at some point ?!?!

Steppin' back to have a look

Stay tuned!

There should be some parts returning soon.  We can make her better, stronger....

Bear Skin Rug Anyone?

It seems that Suzanne was hijacked by a Burt Reynolds fan:
Into everyone's life a little Burt must fall, Maybe a little less Burt

Jason contemplates that statement and his superiority to "the Burt"
By the way, some work did get done...
The bench seat got taken down, it was furry with mold - YUCK!!!

Seat-Backs are part of Suzanne's landscape now.
More BURT!!!

The carpenter's workshop

Started work on the wood cabinets and trim.
Long way to go...sigh.
As you can see - these are just some of the trim panels to refinish or make new of
Buddy Seat - your buddy goes here, needs the wood re-laminated and re-upholstery

The sink/ice box/counter (before) - moldy!
The unit front he front (note the mismatched handles and where the sink used to be)
Hee Hee - that's staying

Ice box - before
Icebox -after

Mice! Where's the Cheese?

We have pulled the interior out of Miranda so we can store parts we don't need.  Oh yeah, and so we can start refurbishing the interior to use in Suzanne.

Miranda "before"  Like the incense burner we found?
It seems that some mice took up residence in the roof above the driver and passenger seats.  Jason said that he could hear things moving around up there when he drove it home but we didn't expect.......

THIS!

Or THIS!
Thankfully, most of what you see is seeds, not what we thought it was at first.  There was 3L or more of seeds stored up there along with chewed insulation and other "leavings".  It was at least a level 5 hoard.  Needless to say, we are going to come up with another alternative for the front headliner!
Miranda (after) see how the mice got in?
The metal seat-backs are needed to install the furniture, Jason is removing them from Miranda (she won't miss them - I hope!)

The Happy Painter

And in this picture you will see some happy trees, happy tikis and a happy volcano.

Once the wardrobe is in the van, the passenger rear window is covered up.  Westfalia made this work by stapling a curtain to a piece of wood that was put up in the window.

We have decided to take it up a notch and put in some fine art.  We came up with a bunch of pictures we liked, put them together and painted them onto the inside of the window glass.

Enjoy!

Fun with Window Seals....and more!

They keep the noise and wet out, so we love them.

The quarter light windows (front doors) are pretty much done -the short seals came in the wrong length (too short of course) so that must be dealt with but, we soldier on - in spite of taking the darn things apart and together more than I'd like to say.

Quarter-lights after assembly
New seals were found for the louvered windows as well so one has been done.  It seems that a set of seals for louvered windows indicates one, not two windows :~p  More ordering to be done there as well.

New Screening Installed

Louvered Window all Apart

Continued from before....the pedals were removed from the floor and re-done (shifter too) stay tuned for for the shift knob we ordered.

Ohhh...Ahhhh...

Kibbles and bits.. and bits..and bits...

Well, no kibbles really but our Pup would like some:

Jasper likes kibbles but would prefer a steak
Here are the bits we have completed this week:
Front dash "before"

With at the bits removed - going nowhere fast!

Park brake, clutch, brake, throttle and shifter

Steering column "before"

 And After
Rear before - someone removed the tire bucket and made up for it by installing some sheet metal over the entire engine bay.

Last, but NOT least, Jason got the tire tray out of the green van (which has been named "Smashy") and ready to go in the vacancy that was in Suzanne.  The hole had been previously covered with sheet metal held in place with silicone sealer (?!?).
Did you know?????
