About the Blog

This is a running record of the work Jason and Lena are doing to bring a 1978 VW Bus back to life. She was very close to death's door when we bought her.

We now have a functional vacationmobile that we are taking on adventures. So, this blog has morphed into a travelogue sprinkled with our break-down stories and latest upgrades. Hopefully more of the latter!

Look back in the archive for ALL the work we did to get her where she is today.

Enjoy :)

More on the Engine

So here is were we are with the engine.....

We are here and not running due partly to hibernation this winter but also to:

  1. We converted to hydraulic lifters.  The supplier sent us the correct cam, lifters and valve springs in the head.  Did not however mention that we needed new (shorter) pushrods and new (thicker) shims to go between the spring and the rocker arms on the rocker shaft.  We have got cut-to-length push-rods and shims that are close but need to be machined in the centre bore so they can slide onto the rocker shaft (in process).  Blahhh!!!
  2. Trying to figure out where the bung for the cylinder head temp guage is and realizing that we got two of the head that doesn't have it.  Same supplier!  Not sure how we are going to deal with that yet....
The engine before it came out

Here is where we are:

Rear (according to VW) of the engine

So far..
